The Devil’s Valley

May 26, 2013 By Sue Leave a Comment

A lovely eight mile walk above Llanfihangel-y-pennant on a bank holiday Sunday in beautiful sunshine provided us with great views and peace and quiet. We walked for four hours and only saw a handful of other like minded walkers. This area is completely unspoilt and for most of our walk the only sound accompanying us was birdsong. The lovely wooded areas are a haven for birds and for the second week in a row we could hear a cuckoo calling out loudly across the valley. Looking back we got great views of Bird Rock and the sea in the distance at Tywyn.
This varied walk took us through woods, forestry and open marshland, passing a number of derelict farm buildings (Hafods in Welsh), too dilapidated for renovation. As we climbed up we spotted two birds on a craggy outpost. After scouring bird books and talking to a knowledgeable guest staying with us, we think they were Ring Ouzels. Apparently these are quite rare so we feel priviledged to have seen this nesting pair.
As we walked Skylarks flew up from the ground and hovered above us, protecting their eggs.
It was a delightful walk and could easily be combined with a look around Mary Jones’ Chapel and Castell y Bere to make an excellent day out.

To find out about the link with the devil you will have to look into the legend that is associated with this area!
