Our property lies in the heart of the ‘Dyfi Biosphere’. UNESCO gave the Dyfi Valley this special name because of the rich diversity of its natural beauty, heritage and wildlife.
The Biosphere contains the nature reserves at Ynyshir, Ynyslas, the Dyfi estuary and the local towns and villages that are steeped in history. The term recognises also the local community’s efforts to make a positive contribution to a more sustainable world.
The Old Coach House makes its contribution to the Dyfi Biosphere by respecting the environment and supporting local shops and providers. We gently and discretely encourage our guests to enjoy and appreciate nature conservation.
We promote Welsh language and culture and highlight local events throughout the year.
Quite simply, The Old Coach House Cottage is an eco-friendly property that we share with our guests.
We are committed to sustainability and every effort is made to ensure that your holiday experience with us at The Old Coach House is comfortable for you, yet kind to the environment.
Our refurbished guest bedrooms have double glazing, well insulated walls and thermostatic controls on all radiators.
We provide ‘Myddfai’ & ‘Faith in Nature’ shampoo and shower/bath gel as well as natural soaps in each of our rooms. We provide ‘Fairtrade’ tea, coffee and drinking chocolate that is supplied to us by a local Welsh company.
Breakfasts and evening meals are made using as much locally sourced food as possible. To this end, we are fortunate to have access to a wide range of individual shops in Machynlleth and farm providers in the surrounding area.
Our organic garden provides us with fruit and vegetables as well as the flowers that are displayed throughout the house.
We purchase chemical-free cleaning and laundry products in bulk to reduce wasteful packaging. Similarly, the bathroom products are purchased in bulk to be decanted into smaller and re-useable containers in the en-suites.
We are able to recycle or compost almost all of our rubbish.
We achieved a gold award from The Green Tourism Business Scheme in 2010 and maintained that standard until 2016. We have now decided to leave the scheme but continue to develop and promote our environmental principles.
