We wish all our guests from the last few years a very Happy New Year and may 2012 bring you all health and happiness.
We have had a busy autumn and winter so far and have been busy doing essential upgrades to parts of the Old Coach House. More are due! we are currently preparing for our important grading visit from the Green Tourism Business Scheme. We are determined to retain our Gold Award!
We look forward to welcoming guests – those who have been to us (several times) – and new ones in 2012.

Machynlleth Festival

Sunday sees the opening of the 25th Machynlleth Festival. This prestigious event attracts music lovers from all over the UK and beyond. As well as the Triple Harp exponent Robin Huw Bowen, the festival offers a wide range of music with an accordion and string quartet, members of the Welsh National Opera and a super Jazz evening on Wednesday. This latter offering features Kyle Eastwood, son of the film legend Clint Eastwood, and Kylewas the composer of music for two of his dad’s recent films, ‘Gran Torino’ and ‘Letters from Iwo Jima’. We are pleased that following an overnight stay by an inspector from Visit Wales that we have retained our four star rating. He was very impressed with a number of aspects of our business. We hope you will come and stay with us soon.

Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT)

Just a reminder that we are only a short drive from this important attraction. CAT has advised us that entry is free for Dads on Father’s Day (Sunday 19th June) when accompanied by their children. Why not check our availability for that weekend and treat yourself to a few days R&R?

Previous Life!

In my previous existence as a teacher in West Yorkshire, I had the pleasure of teaching a young man at St Bede’s in Bradford called David Nowakowski. It was therefore a real delight for me to discover that he is the keyboard player in an up-and-coming band called ‘Scars on 45′. They have become very successful in the USA and have started to attract a lot of attention on this ‘side of the pond’. I recommend listening to the new record so, dear readers, check them out on their own website. Well done, David! I wish I could claim I was in some responsible for helping you get to where you are today, but….

Osprey chicks have hatched!

Move over, Springwatch. Kate and co have been remarkably reticent about our beautiful national birds that are nesting just up the road from the busy Springwatch base at Ynys-Hir. Never mind, what they have yet to mention is that the Osprey eggs started to hatch at the Dyfi Osprey Project. We are now delighted to tell everyone that there are now two Osprey chicks, which are now both feeding successfully. This is an historic event as Ospreys have not bred successfully on the Dyfi Estuary for 400 years.

Surprise sighting on my bike ride!

Well, well, well! Not only have we got Kate Humble and Chris Packham in our area filming Springwatch we also have another famous Welsh celebrity on our highways and byways. I was enjoying my usual bike ride along the back lanes of Aberangell when who did I nearly run over but none other than Griff Rhys Jones! He was on a small country lane with a film crew producing some footage for a programme to be transmitted next year. It may be called Routes of Britain – this particular route was from Holywell to St David’s via Aberangell!

Springwatch is coming to the Dyfi Valley!

The Springwatch team has chosen Ynys -hir RSPB reserve as its first ever Welsh base. Starting at the end of May the new season of Springwatch will feature much of the fantastic wildlife that is to be found here in the Dyfi Valley. Ospreys, lapwings, redshanks and otters are all regular visitors to the reserve and surrounding lowlands. This is an exciting time for the Dyfi valley and Ynys-hir particularly. Our holiday accommodation is only twenty minutes away from the reserve, which makes us a good base to explore this area.

Nora, a female osprey has just laid her first egg at the nesting site at Cors Dyfi Reserve. This is the first time in 400 years that ospreys have successfully mated in the Dyfi valley. The hide and visitor centre has plasma screens showing live pictures of the ospreys. The centre is open throughout the summer and is only twenty minutes from us. Why not come and stay with us and use your time here to visit the Cors Dyfi Reserve and Ynys Hir RSPB reserve as seen on the new season of BBC’s Springwatch.
