Spring has sprung

Finally we are experiencing some spring like weather and as a result this is a great time to visit the Dyfi Valley. Swallows have made their epic journey back to the UK, our first have arrived and are taking up residence in the barn again. Sand martins are passing through and goldfinches and siskins have returned to the garden. The pond is teeming with tadpoles and the lambs are certainly enjoying the longer days. We understand one of the ospreys has returned to its nest on the Dyfi Estuary. Everyone is hoping its mate will also visit again this year and breed successfully.

Away from nature this area is a great place to stay if you are interested in trains. Close to us we have the Rheidol Valley Route, Tal-y-Llyn Railway, Welshpool to Llanfair Careinion and the even smaller Fairbourne Railway. For a good day out check out Arriva Trains Wales who are offering rail tickets to Portmadoc and then a trip on the renowned Ffestiniog Railway.

If you like walking we have the Arans on our doorstep and Cadair Idris only a few miles away. At this time of year the air is clear and the colours are fantastic. Even a stroll along one of the beautiful beaches in the area will blow those winter cobwebs away.

Reducing our carbon footprint!

This week we are continuing to further improve our green credentials.

We are having a wood pellet boiler installed, thus reducing our dependence on oil. This, along with our solar panels installed last year, means that our guest accommodation is now a truly sustainable business.

To mark this development we are offering a complimentary bottle of wine to any guests that book dinner, bed and breakfast during Easter week and quote ‘wood pellet boiler’ when making their reservation.

We are delighted to start our new season with improvements to our guest sitting and dining area.

Over the winter we have built an extension to our dining area which has created a pleasant sun room in which to enjoy views of the garden.

The guest sitting area is larger and includes an open fire, underfloor heating, comfortable settees, books and games.

We are now taking bookings for Easter weekend.

Wild Life Activities

We have just purchased some pond dipping equipment! So if you have young children and would like to discover what wild life we have in our small ponds, come and stay with us for a few days. The Dyfi river is at the end of our garden so you could also take the equipment down to the river and see what you can find. Great fun!

Three Osprey eggs!

We now have three Osprey eggs at the Dyfi Osprey Centre!
Nora laid her first egg of the season at 19.06 on Wednesday, April 18th, her second egg at 15.20 at 15.20 on Saturday, April 21st and third egg 09.06 yesterday morning Tuesday 24th April.
Species protection 24hr surveillance work started last Thursday and will continue until the first chick hatches and this is expected around May 26th.
So all you wildlife fan, don’t wait for BBC’s Springwatch to show you these lovely birds. Why not treat yourself to a cosy bed here at The Old Coach House after a long but rewarding day on the Dyfi estuary?

Ynys – Hir RSPB Reserve

Just had a great day out at Ynys-hir, home to Springwatch again this year. Did some pond dipping and caught damselfly larvae and lesser water-boatmen. Learnt some new bird songs, the chiff chaff, blackcap and pied flycatcher. And saw tufted ducks, herons and egrets. Great family day out, with lots of activities for adults and children.

Cors Dyfi Nature Reserve is mentioned in the Times Weekend section today. The reserve is only half an hour from us, so why not come and stay with us and visit this lovely nature reserve. You might get to see ospreys and water buffalo. You will certainly see siskins, goldfinches and lots of other small birds in our wildlife friendly garden.

Nora the osprey comes back to us

Great news for all osprey fans (no..not the rugby team supporters). On Saturday, Nora the female osprey returned to the Dyfi Osprey Project and we now await the return of Monty her mate. Hopefully they will get back together and have a few more chicks this year again.
The Dyfi Osprey Project re-opens this Friday 30th March until September 2012 – 10am-6pm everyday. So why not treat the family to a close up of this beautiful bird in wonderful surroundings just a few miles from us. Add the chance of seeing some lambs being born in our surrounding fields and this could be a Nature Easter to remember.
